Reducing the daily smoking rate to 5% by 2025 will save $4 billion

Today we joined 23 organisations at the launch of Quit Victoria's #Target2025 campaign.

The goal? To reduce the daily smoking rate in Victoria from 13% to 5% by 2025.

Reducing the rate to 5% by 2025 will save $4 billion in tangible costs to our economy.

In 2015-16, smoking cost the Victorian economy approximately $3.7 billion in tangible costs and $5.8 billion in intangible costs associated with premature deaths.

A projected 450,000 Victorians who currently smoke will die prematurely if they continue to smoke long-term. The prevalence of adults smoking each day was 13.5% in 2014-15.

Quit Victoria believe it’s possible to reduce the daily smoking prevalence to 5% by 2025 and the ADAVB supports this vision. Victoria could be one of the first jurisdictions in the world to reach a 5% daily smoking rate. We can work together to save lives and boost the Victorian economy. #Target2025

ADATas announces new President, Dr Angie Nilsson

The Australian Dental Association Tasmanian Branch welcomes its new President, Dr Angie Nilsson.

Angie graduated from Leeds University in the north of England in 2003 and completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Restorative Dentistry at the Eastman Dental Institute in 2009. She is currently studying a Master of Health Professional Education and is developing a pilot aged care curriculum for final year dental students on clinical placement as part of her research. Angie recently completed a Women in Leadership Australia program through Monash University.

Angie is passionate about advocating for vulnerable and disadvantaged groups. She has worked both in the public and private dental sector. Through her role on council with ADATas, she has enjoyed being involved in initiatives that work towards making a difference to local communities.

Angie's other main area of interest is education and collaboration. In 2017 she facilitated a seminar and workshop that involved a collaboration between various champions of oral health promotion. The seminar encouraged the formation of long-lasting relationships between professional bodies of the dental profession, contributing to a solid foundation for improving oral health outcomes.

Angie said, "Being part of the ADA has given me the opportunity to be part of some really worthwhile projects that can make a difference to people's lives. During my short time on Council, I've met the most amazing people; from dental students to dental specialists, to world renowned dental academics. I feel honoured to have been elected to the role of ADATas President, and am excited to lead and support the branch and members over the next two years".
