New EPA CEO raises the temperature
New EPA Victoria chief John Merritt today told business leaders that he intends to review the EPA’s style and methods of approach, focussing on regulatory activities to achieve improved environmental outcomes.
Speaking at a Breakfast Briefing, arranged by the Australian Industry Group (AiGroup), of which the ADAVB is a member, Mr Merritt said that the Covenant between the EPA and the AiGroup (under which the Dentists for Cleaner Water project was established), was an important part of the EPA’s continuing work, however it needs to be underpinned by sound regulatory enforcement.
“The only businesses that benefit from weak regulations are weak businesses,” he said.
Part of EPA’s increased enthusiasm and transparency will be reflected in larger numbers of mobile Pollution Response Units.
ADAVB members who have already taken advantage of the rebates on compliant amalgam separation equipment can celebrate the wisdom of their move ahead of a stronger regulatory approach. Those who have not yet taken advantage of the rebate scheme are encouraged to do so now, before the agenda shifts much more visibly to an enforcement oriented approach. Clearly documented orders for compliant amalgam separation equipment processed before 30 June, are still entitled to a $1000 rebate (and sometimes more where specific project terms and conditions are met).
Members with enquiries about this project are encouraged to contact the Project Officer, Ian Crawford, on Tuesday or Wednesday on 03 8825 4600.
