Revamp for Medicare?

The Commonwealth Government is considering reviewing Medicare, which costs $17 billion a year.
Health Minister Nicola Roxon this week floated the idea of revamping the universal healthcare scheme to ensure its continuation.

A report released today could galvanise Government thinking about reviewing Medicare which aims to "provide fair and affordable" healthcare. A study by the Australia Institute found that Australians' out-of-pocket expenditure on healthcare has risen from $497 a year in 1999 to $900 a decade later and now accounts for 2.8% of household expenditure.

Ms Roxon floated the idea of reviewing Medicare at the Committee for the Economic Development of Australia conference. She said: “To keep it working well for patients into the future, maybe doctors and the community at large will need to consider how they can play a role in keeping the Medicare Benefits Scheme up to date and sustainable”.

Ms Roxon also spoke of her frustration with Medicare’s Chronic Disease Dental Scheme, saying it was “poorly targeted” and was costing more than four times its original estimate.
