Oral Cancer Facts
World Cancer Day (4 February 2014), focused
on Target 5 of the World Cancer
Declaration: Reduce stigma and dispel myths about cancer - www.worldcancerday.org.
The day, which was promoted under the tagline, “Debunk the myths”, included the
myth buster, Cancer…there are no signs or
symptoms.
Dentists are well placed to play their role in debunking that myth. Diagnosis of oral cancer is increasing worldwide and three Australians are diagnosed each day with this disease. Detected early, prognosis is usually good. However not enough Australians are catching the disease early enough. Regular dental check-ups can play an important role in detecting unusual sores or lesions.
Dentists are trained to detect abnormalities in patients’ mouths and necks, and regular check-ups provide the opportunity for a dentist to quickly detect any unusual changes.
