Dental Bill defeated
Two Independent MPs and the Greens House of Representatives Member today joined the Government to defeat a Bill which aimed to assist dentists caught up in the red tape of Medicare’s Chronic Disease Dental Scheme. Independents Mr Tony Windsor and Mr Rob Oakeshott and the Greens Mr Adam Bandt voted with the Government against the Health Insurance (Dental Services) Bill 2012.
The legislation was introduced by the Shadow Minister for Health and Ageing, Mr Peter Dutton, to ensure that dentists who provided appropriate dental treatment under the scheme were not unfairly penalised for failing to comply with strict administrative requirements that have little or no bearing on patient treatment and patient outcomes.
Human Services Minister Senator Kim Carr announced on May 29 that retrospective changes to compliance arrangements under the scheme. (See Blog post Medicare to review some dental audits)
