Tobacco reforms to protect children

In a further step to promote smoking cessation, the State Government is taking its fight against smoking to children’s playgrounds and sporting events to protect Victoria’s most vulnerable from the effects of second-hand cigarette smoke.

Health Minister Mr David Davis has announced that the Tobacco Act would be amended to ensure Victoria continued to protect the health of its youngest citizens and reduce smoking rates.

“More than 4000 lives are lost each year in Victoria as a result of smoking and it costs $2.4 million in direct health costs and lost productivity every year", Mr Davis says.
