Pensioners say Greens dental scheme falls short

The Combined Pensioners & Superannuants Association of NSW welcomed the Greens dental policy but believe the cap is too restrictive. The Association’s Senior Policy Advisor, Amelia Christie, said the cap of $1000 per person over two years would not be anywhere near enough for people with more complex dental problems. She said that the Chronic Disease Dental Scheme (CDDS), which closed last year, was missed by people with chronic health problems.

The CDDS provided patients with up to $4250 worth of treatment services over two years. Ms Christie said that 80% of people who accessed the scheme were pensioners, carers and others on low incomes.  The new adult dental scheme proposed by the Labor Government does not commence until 1 July 2014 - assuming the Government is returned at the forthcoming election.
