Self-education cap deferred
The Federal Government has deferred the introduction of the
proposed $2000 cap on work-related self-education expenses until July 2015.
The Australian Dental Association and other professional organisations, who joined together to oppose the cap, welcomed the move. ADA President Dr Karin Alexander said: "The Australian community deserve to have their dental care provided by the most skilled and educated workforce. This cap would have achieved nothing more than act as a tax on education."
The bodies said that the delay would allow for proper informed discussion. They claimed that the cap would have a significant, unplanned impact on skills across many professions. The organisations believe that the deferment will lead to the scrapping of the cap by the next Government.
The announcement was contained in the Government’s Economic Statement announced by the Treasurer, Mr Chris Bowen.
Thanks to those ADA members who joined their colleagues from all professions to call for the scrapping of this proposed cap.
