Streamline AHPRA says Parliamentary Committee

The Legislative Council’s Legal and Social Issues Legislation Committee report on its Inquiry into the performance of the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency has been tabled in State Parliament.

In the report, the Committee believes “it is timely for Victoria to consider becoming a co-regulatory jurisdiction” in managing health practitioner complaints.  “The committee’s evidence indicates that the process for managing health complaints is best managed at a local level, rather than at a national level by AHPRA, and most importantly, with the main aim of protecting the Victorian public,” the report states.

The 179 page report recommends however, that Victoria should remain part of the national scheme’s registration and accreditation arrangements.

The report also highlights a number of issues that should be addressed, including improved handling of complaints, greater financial transparency, the need to provide ongoing funding to various health programs, and a further streamlining of the large bureaucracy that supports the National Scheme. (ADAVB’s submission to the Inquiry recommended streamlining.)

Further ADA Inc. and ADAVB comment on the report's recommendations will follow once we have had opportunity to digest it.
