Traffic light food labelling move welcomed

The food industry can play an active role in improving public health by providing consumers with information to make healthier and easier choices about the food they purchase. This is the message of the Obesity Policy Coalition (OPC) following Sanitarium’s proposed front-of-pack traffic light labelling system. A voluntary traffic light labelling system was recommended by the Federal Government’s Labelling Logic review. OPC’s Jane Martin said that with obesity at record levels and projected to increase, the move shows how the food industry can play an active role in improving public health by giving consumers information about the food they purchase. Cancer Council Victoria research shows that most Australian consumers favour traffic light labelling on food packaging.
