How far do you have to run to burn off your sugary drink habit?

A thought-provoking new video from Rethink Sugary Drink shows how much exercise you would need to do to burn off your sugary drink habit – 52km of running each week in some cases.

The video features a man running from the city to the country to burn off his sugary drink habit.

It also highlights that too much sugar from sugary drinks can lead to weight gain and obesity, increasing your risk of disease. It can also lead to tooth decay.

The alternative? It’s natural, free and refreshing – water!

New report shows high rates of preventable hospitalisations in Australia

A new report released today by the National Health Performance Authority, illustrates the high rates of potentially preventable hospitalisations in Australia.

Focusing on five key health areas that contribute most to potentially preventable hospitalisations (PPH), including dental conditions, the report looks at the variation in rates across Primary Health Network (PHN) areas.

Nationally, the lowest PPH rate for dental conditions was in Central and Eastern Sydney PHN with 190 admissions per 100,000 people. The highest was in Western Qld PHN (443 per 100,000).

Western Vic had the highest rate of PPHs for dental conditions in Victoria with 377 per 100,000  - the equal third highest nationally.

The lowest in Victoria was in the South Eastern Melbourne PHN: 237 per 100,000.

Further information
  • What is a PPH? "Potentially preventable hospitalisation": a hospital admission, which may have been prevented by timely access to adequate primary health care to prevent the condition, or that the condition once developed could have been better treated in the community.

It's time for community dentists to get the respect, recognition and reward they deserve

ADAVB and Professionals Australia (PA) Alliance

It's time for community dentists to get the respect, recognition and reward they deserve.

ADAVB is proud to announce a ground-breaking alliance with Professionals Australia which will support public dentists in obtaining the fair working conditions they deserve.

ADAVB has funded industrial representation of public dentists for over 10 years. Most recently we funded representation in the EBA negotiations which resulted in public hospital dentists gaining improvements to their working conditions.

However we were disappointed when community dentists were advised that their employers had not agreed to them receiving the same terms as their colleagues in the hospital sector.  This is unfair and needs to be rectified.

Letting our community dentists down lets our community down.

The ADAVB has stepped in with the expertise and track record of Professionals Australia so that we can secure the professional future of public dentists. The Professionals Australia team brings extensive campaign, legal and negotiating experience to our efforts to support community dentists.

Together with Professionals Australia, we will negotiate on behalf of public dentists for fairer pay and conditions. This action will not only enable fairer conditions, but will also set the foundation for a better recognised dental profession, regardless of the sector you are employed in. Our alliance comes at no extra cost to ADAVB members.

If you are a community dentist, join us in this new partnership. Have your voice heard. Get the fair deal you deserve.

Study finds “no-drill” dentistry stops tooth decay

A University of Sydney study has revealed that tooth decay (dental caries) can be stopped, reversed, and prevented without the need for the traditional “fill and drill” approach.

The results of the seven year study, published in Community Dentistry and Oral Epidemiology, found that the need for fillings was reduced by 30 to 50% through preventative oral care.

“It’s unnecessary for patients to have fillings because they’re not required in many cases of dental decay,” said the study’s lead author, Associate Professor Wendell Evans (pictured).

A/Prof Evans and his team developed the Caries Management System treatment “no-drill” which  involves four aspects:
  • Application of high concentration fluoride varnish by dentists to the sites of early decay
  • Attention to home tooth brushing skills
  • Restriction of between-meal snacks and beverages containing added sugar
  • Risk-specific monitoring.
These preventive messages are consistent with those promoted by the ADA over an extended period.
